About
Welcome to the Prince of Wales Pub, one of the best beer and food joints on the SF Peninsula. What may look like simply a small neighborhood bar has a quite storried history. It was often referred to in Herb Caen’s column, and has been frequented (or at least visited) by many celebrities over the years.
Past visitors include Ronald Reagan (who bought the pub a round in 1964 when first running for governor), Charlie Daniels (he also bought the pub a round), Billy Jean King (she held Womansports magazine staff meetings there), Bing Crosby used to hang out at the bar, sipping Bass Ale, and at least three cast members of Cheers (you’ll find their photos at the end of the bar, in the corner).
The pub is also known for hosting the longest running darts tournament, and still has a bullet hole in the bar from its days as a Hell’s Angles hangout.
There is also a long tradition of live music at the Pub. It is where three Menlo College students first took the stage as The Kingston Trio, has hosted the South City Blues Band for the past several decades, and hosts the First Thursday Bluegrass series.
On nights when there isn’t live entertainment, the pub is well-equipped with two dart boards, a Foosball table, a backgammon table, a juke box, and three arcade games–1945 Plus, Centipede, and a Pac Man table console.
